Mukat: one of my first Comics

This is my personal treasure, one of the my early works as a comic artist. Photocopied comics that I did when I was in college way back 2002. Hnd pa back to back kasi mahirap kausap yung mga nagseserox samin. :)

Painting Submisssion at ECCA

I recently joined the ECCA Semi-Annual Art Competition by AAP and the contest theme for 2010 is Mother and Child. I worked for a month for my entry and I wanted to finish it on time until the deadline on May 30th. I have the money to buy the materials I need, however, I am really have a limited time to paint, I can only do it during rest days and just a couple of hours during working days. I even have a calendar in front of me every time I sit down on my laptop to remind me that I need to get working, as to sometimes I get carried away when I log in to facebook.  Anyway, this blog have some pictures of my entry and the submission last may 30th at Valle Verde 1 at the ECCA museun.

I was with my colleague in Pangasinan Patrick Fernandez during the submission, he went from Pangasinan to submit his own entry, It was really a great experience! I get to see the beautiful artworks from some of the artist in the Philippines! When I compared my work to some of the best that I saw, I was really amazed and realized I need to get more and more practice like I always do. Also a note to myself, prepare at least 2 months for the entry, specially if you really want to win. I also get to be a member of AAP again! wow! member of Arts Association of the Philippines! being a member is already a great privilege.

The awarding ceremonies and the opening of the exhibition of the Fifty (50) finalist shall be held at the GSIS Exhibition Hall, GSIS Building. Roxas Boulevard, on Friday June 11, 2010, at 6 O'clock in the evening.

All 50 winning entries  will automatically be included in the book "Great Themes in Philippine Art: Mother and Child"

Studio Ghibli Movies I Recently Watched

I found a site online that I can watch the Studio Ghibli and other movies. It was really great to see movies I loved in full English dub and I really love it! It's really nice to just concentrate on the visuals instead of reading the subtitles. However, I don't mind the subtitles, I'm just saying that It's really a different experience as a whole as compared to watching and reading the subs.

I already watched most of the Studio Ghibli films in the original Japanese version with subtitles, I loved the first time I watched it, and I'm instantly in love with the characters and the story and the art and the animation. It was a couple of years back, so when I searched the internet and found  the english versions, I'm so happy and watched the movies all over again.

First that I watched was Spirited Away, the DVD I bought don't have the subtitled version of the movie so I didn't watched It yet.  What I love about the movie is the color and the animation as well as the story. The message of the story is really nice and had me want to watch more animated films.

Then I watched Princess Mononoke, another great film. What I like about the movie is the heart of it and the message to love and care nature. The movie was over 2 hours but you wont be bored because as the story goes, you'll definitely get hooked watching, I guess that's the magic of the Studio Ghibli Films. The characters are so alive and the movement was never short of life. After which I watched Tales of the Earthsea,  My neighbor Totoro which is a very good-feel movie, Whisper of the heart and the now I'm currently watching, Nausica of the Valley of the Wind. In the future i would really like to watch Ponyo the latest Ghibli Movie they say it's good and I'm expecting nothing less...

Pista'y Dayat 2010 Schedule of Events

I am really a fan of the Pista'y Dayat Celebration. Ever since I was a  kid I never miss attending the event. Last 2005 and 2006 we won in the sand Sculpting Competition. It was really memorable, not because of the prizes, but because of the enjoyment and the ambiance that the festival provides. I would really love to attend the fest if not for my work. However I will always be here to support the event because I love Pangasinan and I love my heritage! :)

Pangasinan Festivals

Last day-off I went home to my hometown in Lingayen, Pangasinan to attend our local fiesta. I was not there during the main day though because I need to go to work, which is very sad. Not so sad though, because i was able to attend the opening of the art exhibit of my artist friends in Pangasinan, they are also members of the Dagupan Artist Circle and the Pangasinan Artist Group. The exhibit is titled "DakatDakat" meaning to dip oneself in water. I was invited by Patrick Fernandez in Facebook for the event, as a part of the Bangus Festival 2010 celebration in Dagupan City the Bangus capital of the world. The exhibit is showcased at Cafe Dumarc at 4pm, April 22. I was there by 5pm because I had a quick nap before going to the said exhibit.

The pictures above were taken during the exhibit. Thank you very much Patrick, Boni, Jojit and the rest of the Dagupan Artist Circle for the warm welcome. After the exhibit, We were also able to have a shot of GSM blue. I was so drunk and sleepy after that I was not able to go home that night, we had  very good time chatting and exchanging ideas and experiences. It really made my short stay in Pangasinan so memorable.

The day after, April 23 in the afternoon, me and my brothers Lou-mel, Jep-jep and Not-not my niece went to the Lingayen Gulf for a swim, then we realized that at the same time the 1st Bagoong Festival together with 2010 Pistay Dayat Celebration is being formally Opened. We watched the colorful parade of the street dancers and got to roam around a bit.

I really enjoyed the my trip back home, and I wished that my stay would be for a week but sadly, I need to go back for work, money matters. :) I'd definitely go back and have my summer experience be a great one!

Summer Komikon 2010

Yesterday Me and my friends attended the Summer Komikon 2010 at UP Bahay ng Alumni QC Philippines. We arrived there sometime after 10am. We fell in line before entering paid P50 then finally set-up the Indie Table assigned to me, well that was the only vacant table so we took it. I sold my latest comics creation Baboy 2 as well as my old comics that includes Baboy, MLU, EDSA, and DogStyle. Present also in my table is 8 Oras of my housemate Roelito and Pinoy Komiks Rebyu by Randy Valiente the same person who wrote EDSA.

There were many peolple and komiks and toys and everything, I was not able to roam around that much though because I'm stuck at my table selling my comics. At first nobody seems to find me because my table is on the far corner with a huge post blocking the view. Then a litter later people started walking by, browsing and buying my comics which made me very happy. At the end of the day only a few copies of my comics are left, Baboy2, MLU and Dogstyle were sold out! :) as well as 8 oras of Roel.

I was able to meet my frieds in Comics Gerry, RH, Freely, Hazel, Mcoy, Randy, Chapel, Rodent of SSM, the Masters from Atomic Underground. Culture Crash Idols: Melvin, Jon, Micheal, Elmer D.,  Omeng, Tin-tin and many many more... My thanks to all who have dropped by my table, and those who appreciate and love my works. let's meet again on the next convention! :)

After the Komikon we had a lot of komiks in our bags, had a great time and really enjoyed the event. Roel Even won at the On-the-Spot comics strip making contest! It's really one memorable saturday! :D
